On 27.11, the German-Baltic Future Foundation organized a guest lecture at the University of Tartu together with the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies .  f.l. Harald Krempchen (German Defence Attaché in Estonia) and Daniil Iarlykovskii (Brand Ambassador of the German-Baltic Future Foundation) The German Defence Attaché in Estonia Harald Krempchen presented Germany’s view on the security situation in the region and spoke about his country’s efforts to make Europe more safe and ready to deter aggression.  He covered Germany’s plans to strengthen its military through increased investments and procurements, spoke about the German-Estonian partnership in the security sphere, and described the plans to fortify NATO’s eastern border, highlighting the 45th German Armoured Brigade as an example of the growing German-Baltic partnership.  Following the presentation the participants were able to speak with the attaché and ask questions about the present and the future of European security.  The Foundation was represented by Katrin Deren, Deputy Head of the Country Office Estonia , Brand Ambassador Daniil Iarlykovskii, and Brand Ambassador Filipp Gavrilov.  The German-Baltic Foundation thanks the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies and the German Embassy in Estonia for their invaluable cooperation.

On November 19th, interns from the AHK in Tallinn and the German Embassy - Anna, Julian and Antonia - visited German lessons at Tallinna Tehnikagümnaasium. Their visit transformed the regular classroom routine into an engaging and lively experience that sparked interest even among the quietest students.  The interns began by presenting Germany in a fresh and interactive way, different from what students were used to in their usual lessons. This was followed by a Kahoot quiz to test how well the students had listened—complete with small prizes for the winners. Afterwards, they led a short mini-lesson on how to order in a café in German, giving students the chance to practice their language skills with real native speakers.  Overall, the visit of these young interns brought new energy into the classroom, increased students’ motivation to learn German, and showed them the real-life value of the language—perhaps even inspiring some to visit Germany in the future.  The visit was organized by the DBJW Country Office Estonia .

The German-Baltic Future Foundation has recently hosted a meetup for this year’s Brand Ambassadors . The event took place from 14th to 16th of November in Kaulsdorf, a quarter of Berlin. Over the course of three days, ambassadors took part in various events ranging from brainstorming sessions to visiting the German Bundestag. These, combined with a range of presentations and lectures, provided a perfect balance between learning and putting skills to action. Besides the learning part, the participants had time to socialize, network, and explore the city. In today’s article, we asked several Brand Ambassadors to share their impressions about this year’s meetup in order to show what it was like to take part in the event: Patriks Strazds, Latvia Patriks Strazds At first I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to partake in this meeting, as that implied many unknown factors - I had never traveled alone via plane as I usually travel with my family in such a way. Also I wasn’t 100% sure of how the meeting was going to be held. In addition, I didn’t know 80% of the people that were supposed to attend. So I did the only logical thing - for the first time in my career I booked my own plane tickets. The journey to Berlin was awesome. At first I was planning on using a taxi to get from Berlin airport to the meeting place, but upon seeing the prices of taxi rides I switched up my plans and went all in to understand the wonders of the German engineered railway systems. With a little help of Google maps and happy to help officers I made it to the meeting spot. I even visited one of those shady kebab places that provides the ultimate meal for the best price - such a wonderful experience. Overall the meeting was a successful adventure where in the tight time graph I also managed to squeeze in a daily morning run and a little excursion across Berlin right after the meeting on Sunday, right before my flight back home. I can confidently say that this was a successful meeting where not only I got to meet many inspiring people, but also I felt motivated enough to think - what do I want to achieve with my life. I absolutely loved this and I highly recommend attending this! Daniil Iarlykovskii, Estonia This meeting marked my first time in Berlin and it was as good as a first trip can be. I arrived a little before the conference and had the opportunity to explore the city independently. Then, when the conference started we got an amazing cultural experience with a visit to a museum and a tour to the Reichstag dome. Daniil Iarlykovskii It was a great opportunity to connect with other Brand Ambassadors, thanks to which I have gotten several new ideas on what I can do in my capacity as an ambassador. The lectures and the workshops were interesting to take part in, as they aimed to give us inspiration and guide us on how we can become more active members of our communities. Though the event only lasted a few days, in my opinion it was a great experience that really gave a lot to the participants. We did every kind of activity imaginable, including but not limited to learning, brainstorming, discussing, and tourism. I was especially glad to practice my German and take some reading material home. The opportunity gave me some new ideas on how I can learn and motivated me to continue studying daily. Peter Pidopryhora, USA (currently in Germany) When joining this group, I didn’t really know what I could even do. I had some ideas, but nothing formalized or very well thought out. So when I saw a chance to go to Berlin, a city I had never visited before, and have a few days just talking and throwing around ideas with like-minded people, I made sure to have some free time in my schedule for it. Peter Pidopryhora We spent the weekend listening to several interesting presentations, talking about future projects and what each of us could do for others, building on our strengths and the connections we already had. Some of the talks were given by members of the foundation, showing and teaching us certain interesting ways we could start thinking and developing our projects and ideas. Some of the talks were given by the Brand Ambassadors themselves, including me, who presented my Ukrainian student group at my university, UniBonn.UA , and what we had done over the past few years. And some of the talks came from people who were invited to present, like the presentation done by DroneAid Berlin , which I found to be fascinating and very important under the circumstances. Thankfully we didn’t spend the entire time only listening, writing and thinking, as inspiring as it may be, but also got to explore the city itself, at least for a few hours. Seeing the Brandenburg Gate, seeing the German Bundestag and getting a tour inside, was absolutely thrilling. We also got to see one of the checkpoints from the eastern part of the city, how it looked before reunification. It was nice to learn more about how the city functioned when it was split in two, and how the people lived during that time. I definitely would want to come back and explore the city even more. Since we were mostly in the eastern part, it would be nice to see some of the west next time. All in all the brainstorming session helped me find some inspiration for a few possible projects, which was exactly what I needed. Met some great people that I hopefully will get to spend more time with on future endeavors. Gleb Konkin-von Serebrowski, Germany As a long-term participant, I am more than happy to represent the ever-evolving structure of the German-Baltic Future Foundation, where Ukraine is another +1. I am also very glad to participate alongside the youngsters and welcome them to this fruitful cooperation. During this meet-up, the programme was more than fulfilled and important knowledge was presented - I would like to express my sincere gratitude to DroneAid Berlin for taking the time to share their valuable insights on the critical issue of drone-conducted warfare. Gleb Konkin-von Serebrowski The chairman, Thomas von Lüpke, showcased the most important border points of the Cold War in Berlin, as well as the city centre and a visit to the Bundestag. The youngsters were very welcome to take part in extracurricular activities afterwards. Arguably, one the best way to get to “feel” a place is to spend some time in a local bar with the locals. I am sure it was a valuable experience for a new generation of young ambassadors and an important learning experience for younger/new participants. Overall, I am very happy to have been able to attend and organise this event, participate in it, and promote important insights.

Am 17. November 2025 fand im Litauischen Parlament die Jubiläumskonferenz des Litauisch-Deutschen Forums statt. Unter dem Motto „Zeit, Führung zu zeigen und mit einer Stimme zu sprechen“ diskutierten hochrangige Vertreterinnen und Vertreter aus Politik, Diplomatie, Wirtschaft, Kultur und Zivilgesellschaft über die Zukunft der bilateralen Zusammenarbeit und Europas Sicherheit. Besonders erfreulich war die Teilnahme der Deutsch-Baltischen Zukunftsstiftung (DBJW). Ihr Vorstandsvorsitzender Thomas von Lüpke, der Leiter des deutschen Landesbüros Linus Kūhl sowie der Leiter des litauischen Landesbüros Daumantas Katinas brachten wichtige Impulse aus der Jugend- und Austauschförderung ein – ein Bereich, der für Vertrauen und Resilienz zwischen den beiden Ländern zentral bleibt. Sicherheit und gemeinsame Verantwortung Im ersten Konferenzteil standen die Stationierung der deutschen Brigade in Litauen und die sicherheitspolitischen Herausforderungen Europas im Fokus. Beiträge u. a. von Außenminister Kęstutis Budrys, Sicherheitsberater des litauischen Staatspräsidenten Deividas Matulionis sowie deutschen Bundestagsmitgliedern machten deutlich, wie eng Deutschland und Litauen sicherheitspolitisch miteinander verflochten sind. Innovation und wirtschaftliche Zukunft Der zweite Teil widmete sich der Frage, wie Europa durch technologische Entwicklung und wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit widerstandsfähiger werden kann. Vertreterinnen und Vertreter aus Industrie, Verteidigungsforschung und Logistik diskutierten über neue Chancen für die deutsch-litauische Kooperation. Ein starkes Zeichen zum 20-jährigen Bestehen Die Abschlussworte des deutschen Botschafters Dr. Cornelius Zimmermann unterstrichen die Bedeutung eines kontinuierlichen, vertrauensvollen Dialogs. Die Jubiläumskonferenz zeigte eindrucksvoll, dass Litauen und Deutschland nicht nur Partner, sondern gemeinsame Gestalter eines sicheren und innovativen Europas sind – und dass Organisationen wie das DBJW dabei eine wichtige Brückenfunktion übernehmen.

November 18, known as the Proclamation Day of the Republic of Latvia , marks Latvia’s declaration of independence in 1918 by the People’s Council. On the occasion of this anniversary, the Embassy of Latvia in Berlin, together with the Representation of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and in the presence of Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister President Daniel Günther, hosted a ceremonial reception. The German-Baltic Future Foundation, represented by Thomas von Lüpke, Jost Wiethölter, and Oleksandra Frankevych, was honored to join the celebration. Alda Vanaga, Ambassador of Latvia to Germany, during her Welcome Speech Latvia’s Ambassador to Germany, Alda Vanaga , opened the reception with an inspiring address. She expressed her deep appreciation for the partnership with Germany and emphasized the importance of “standing up for a future in which freedom, peace, and democracy are a given.” Minister President Daniel Günther  also conveyed his gratitude for the strong ties with Latvia. He paid tribute to those who had the courage to fight for independence—both in 1918 and again in 1990 on the Day of the Restoration of Independence , when Latvia regained its freedom from the Soviet Union on 4 May. He further highlighted the need to oppose rising antisemitism and right-wing extremism, calling on everyone to look to the future with optimism: “We cannot simply say that everything was better in the past. We must also say that we are working to make the future better.” Following the opening speeches, guests enjoyed a warm and festive gathering accompanied by light refreshments and engaging conversations.

Am 14. November 2025 fand in Vilnius das Forum zur Förderung der Mehrsprachigkeit in Litauen statt. Am Forum nahmen zahlreiche Organisationen und rund 100 Teilnehmende aus ganz Litauen teil. Auch das litauische Landesbüro der Deutsch-Baltischen Zukunftsstiftung war vertreten. Zu Beginn des Forums hielten die Botschafter des Königreiches Spanien, der Republik Frankreich und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sowie die Leiterin des British Council in Litauen ihre Grußreden in ihren Muttersprachen sowie auf Litauisch, was eine gute Einleitung in die anschließenden Diskussionen bildete. Anschließend diskutierten die Vertreterinnen und Vertreter litauischer Gymnasien, Sprachschulen, Universitäten und Jugendorganisationen in fünf Arbeitsgruppen zu folgenden Themen: Sprachen und Sicherheitsdialog: Wie der Fremdsprachenunterricht zur Demokratie und zur Resilienz von Gemeinschaften beiträgt Integration kultureller Aktivitäten: Fremdsprachen durch Theater, Kino und Musik Anpassung des Lehrplans: realistische Szenarien für Schulen Ausbildung und Bindung von Fremdsprachenlehrkräften: ein systemischer Ansatz Stärkung der Lernmotivation: Wie kann man Fremdsprachen erfolgreich an Schulen verankern? In der letzten Sektion nahm der Leiter des litauischen DBJW-Landesbüros, Daumantas Katinas, an der Podiumsdiskussion teil und präsentierte den Teilnehmenden unter anderem die Initiativen und Projekte des DBJW. Parallel zum Forum fand eine Ideenmesse statt, auf der auch das DBJW mit einem Stand vertreten war. Der Mitarbeiter des litauischen DBJW-Büros, Ahmed Salem, informierte dort Interessierte über alle Aktivitäten, Projekte und Initiativen des DBJW und knüpfte wertvolle Kontakte. Das litauische DBJW-Landesbüro bedankt sich bei den Organisatorinnen und Organisatoren des Forums und freut sich, Teil dieser gemeinsamen europäischen Initiative gewesen zu sein.

Vergangene Woche  trafen sich Vertreter*innen der Deutsch-Baltischen Zukunftsstiftung (DBJW)  und des Johan-Skytte-Instituts für Politikwissenschaften  der Universität Tartu ( https://skytte.ut.ee/en ) , um über zukünftige Kooperationsmöglichkeiten und Partnerschaften  zu sprechen. Das Gespräch verlief äußerst konstruktiv und zeigte deutlich das gemeinsame Interesse an einer vertieften Zusammenarbeit. Von Seiten des Johan-Skytte-Instituts nahm Maili Vilson, Stellvertretende Leiterin für akademische Angelegenheiten, teil. Die Deutsch-Baltische Zukunftsstiftung wurde durch Katrin Deren, Stellvertretende Leiterin des Landesbüros Estland, sowie Daniil Iarlykovskii, unseren Brand Ambassador, vertreten. Im Mittelpunkt des Treffens standen Ideen zur gemeinsamen Förderung politischer Bildung und des Jugendengagements in Estland, insbesondere unter jungen Estinnen und Esten – einer Zielgruppe, die beide Institutionen miteinander verbindet. Das Institut zeigte großes Interesse, künftig an Veranstaltungen der Stiftung in Estland sowie im Rahmen des deutsch-baltischen Netzwerks mitzuwirken. Bereits Ende November ist eine Gastvorlesung am Johan-Skytte-Institut  geplant – der Auftakt zu einer Reihe gemeinsamer Aktivitäten, die in Zukunft folgen sollen. Darüber hinaus sind weitere gemeinsame Projekte im Gespräch, um die Kooperation langfristig zu vertiefen. Vom 13. bis 19. Oktober fanden in Litauen bereits zum 10. Mal die Tage der deutschen Sprache statt. Seit 2016 macht die partizipative Initiative jedes Jahr im Oktober sichtbar, wie lebendig und vielfältig die deutsche Sprache in Litauens Bildung, Kultur und Wirtschaft verankert ist. Zahlreiche Institutionen im ganzen Land laden zu einem abwechslungsreichen Programm ein – mit Veranstaltungen, Workshops, Ausstellungen, Filmvorführungen und Mitmachaktionen rund um die deutsche Sprache. In diesem Jahr standen über 170 verschiedene Aktivitäten auf dem Programm der Tage der deutschen Sprache. Das litauische DBJW-Landesbüro war dabei an fünf Veranstaltungen und Initiativen beteiligt: Am 14. Oktober 2025 initiierte das litauische Landesbüro ein Treffen litauischer Jugendlicher mit Angehörigen der in Litauen stationierten deutschen Panzerbrigade 45. Am  15. Oktober 2025 setzte das Landesbüro seine Initiative „Deutsch verbindet: Von der Schule in die Welt“ fort und besuchte mit Vorträgen zu den Themen Karriereperspektiven mit Deutsch  sowie deutsch-litauische Wirtschaftsbeziehungen zwei Gymnasien in Niederlitauen. Das litauische DBJW-Landesbüro beteiligt sich zudem an der Initiative „Deutschlehrer/-in des Jahres“ und am Memes-Wettbewerb zur deutschen Sprache, und freut sich besonders auf die Fortsetzung des Fotowettbewerbs „Spuren“ ,  der in diesem Jahr erneut stattfindet. From 16 to 19 October 2025, Riga hosted t he 7th German-Baltic Conference (GBC)  under the theme “Rethinking Security Through Youth.”  The conference brought together young leaders, policymakers, security experts from across Europe to explore the role of youth in shaping Europe’s security and resilience. Held under the patronage of MEP Rasa Juknevičienė, the event opened at the Latvian National Museum of History with greetings from German and Latvian officials, followed by a high-level panel on “Defending Freedom: Youth Engagement in National and Regional Security.” During the session, panellists discussed and responded to participants’ questions on how young people can meaningfully contribute to defence and crisis preparedness. Over three intensive days at one of the venues of the University of Latvia, participants took part in expert sessions and interactive workshops. Presentations included a keynote by Christoph Eichhorn, former German Ambassador to Estonia and Bulgaria, alongside contributions from Prof. Dr. Wittpahl of Klaipėda University and Jānis Karlsbergs of NATO StratCom COE. Building on this expert input, participants worked in three thematic clusters, turning debate into concrete ideas and policy recommendations. The resulting recommendations will be presented to Members of the European Parliament in Brussels. Cluster A – Youth-Centric Innovation in Defence proposed a modern “Total Defence Service Duty” integrating military, civil, and digital service options, and an Erasmus+ Resilience Track to connect youth with practical defence learning opportunities. Cluster B – Youth Brain Drain and Security examined how demographic decline affects regional stability and proposed a Baltic Alliance for Security and Innovation Studies (BASIS) and an “I Choose the Baltics” initiative to turn brain drain into “brain circulation.” Cluster C – European Security and Discourse explored the social dimension of security, calling for a digital platform to document Russian disinformation and hybrid attacks, a “Personal Preparedness Agenda” to enhance civic awareness, and a cultural network inspired by Arte to strengthen European identity and unity. Meanwhile, the GBYEN organizations brought together youth-work professionals and organizations to exchange on “Security through Resilience.” Sessions addressed the experiences of Ukrainian youth during the war, cultural preservation in times of crisis, and the need for stronger civil-military cooperation. GBYEN organizations emphasized the need for greater youth involvement in security, resilience, and multi-level cooperation across Europe. The German-Baltic Future Foundation warmly thanks all participants from 20 countries — including experts, cluster teams, and young journalists who documented the event and will later share their insights and reflections. Their engagement showed that young Europeans are not only participants but drivers of a more secure, united, and resilient Europe.

Am 16. Oktober wurde in Riga feierlich die alljährliche Deutsch-Baltische Konferenz im Lettischen Nationalmuseum für Geschichte eröffnet - zentrales Thema: " Rethinking Security Through Youth". Ein besonderer Höhepunkt der Eröffnung war das Grußwort von Andrius Kubilius , Kommissar für Verteidigung und Raumfahrt der Europäischen Union, welcher die Stärke einer Europäischen Verteidigung sowie die Wichtigkeit der Jugendlichen als zukünftige Entscheidungsträger hervorhob: Dear Youth Ambassadors, Andrius Kubilius The current political and security situation around us requires serious rethinking of how we envision our European security architecture in the future. To be ready to defend peace and itself, Europe is taking significant steps to strengthen its own security. This afternoon, the European Commission will present the Defence Readiness Roadmap 2030. We are building on the unprecedented decisions we took during this year, which created a ‘big bang’ in defence spending and legal, industrial and political opportunities to boost defence production. Our roadmap creates conditions for clear plans, timetables, deliverables and indicators and a clear reporting and monitoring system, to ramp up procurement and production, bring permanent defence innovation, build European defence flagship projects and produce with, in and for Ukraine. Our roadmap shows all the major milestones to achieve Defence Readiness by 2030, so we can deter Russian aggression, prevent war and preserve peace. Our policy is production, our purpose is peace. But it’s not enough to have only material defence readiness. We must also have institutional defence readiness. Now the United States focuses more and more on the Indo Pacific, Europe needs to take responsibility for its own defence. As President von der Leyen said: This must be Europe’s Independence moment. It’s time to build a European Defence Union. A new security architecture for Europe, to strengthen the European part of NATO, involving also Ukraine, which has unique battle tested experience on the democratic side of the European continent. With also the United Kingdom and Norway on board, to make us much stronger. We need to build also our Political defence readiness - it’s no use having enough modern weapons, if we do not have the political will to fight, to use those weapons to defend ourselves. Putin is using all possible means of hybrid warfare to diminish our political defence readiness. We need to learn to strengthen our political will, to defend ourselves and deter hybrid provocations. In this regard, the theme of this year’s German-Baltic Conference – Rethinking Security Through Youth – is very relevant. Achieving material defence readiness and creating institutional and political defence readiness require the ideas, determination, and will not only of current but also future leaders of Europe. Am 14. Oktober 2025 folgten litauische Jugendliche der Einladung des litauischen DBJW-Landesbüros und besuchten im Rahmen der Tage der Deutschen Sprache den Generalstab der Deutschen Panzerbrigade 45 in Vilnius. Zu Beginn des Treffens berichteten Angehörige der Bundeswehr über die Entscheidung, die Deutsche Brigade in Litauen zu stationieren, über die Entstehungsgeschichte dieses Prozesses sowie über die aktuelle Lage und die künftigen Pläne der deutschen Soldatinnen und Soldaten in Litauen. Im Anschluss kam es zu einem regen Austausch zwischen den Jugendlichen und den Bundeswehrangehörigen. Die Teilnehmenden interessierten sich insbesondere für die Lebensbedingungen der deutschen Soldatinnen und Soldaten in Litauen, ihre Freizeitgestaltung, soziale Initiativen, das Familienleben sowie für Themen rund um deutsche Schulen und Deutschland allgemein. Das litauische DBJW-Landesbüro stellte sich zudem kurz vor und schlug vor, im Frühjahr 2026 ein Tagesseminar zur Integration der Bundeswehrangehörigen und ihrer Familien zu organisieren. Das DBJW-Landesbüro Litauen bedankt sich herzlich bei der Deutschen Panzerbrigade 45 für das freundliche Treffen, die anregende Diskussion und die Bereitschaft, auch in Zukunft weiterhin eng zusammenzuarbeiten.

Am 1. und 2. Oktober 2025 fand im Institut für Fremdsprachen und Kulturen in Tartu eine Konferenz für Deutschlehrende und Interessierte statt. Als Partner der Deutsch-Baltischen Zukunftsstiftung waren wir mit dabei und haben uns sehr gefreut, viele bekannte Gesichter wiederzutreffen und neue Kontakte zu knüpfen. Schon beim Begrüßungskaffee war die Stimmung herzlich. Nach den Grußworten der Gastgeber folgte ein spannender Vortrag von Prof. Christoph Schroeder (Universität Potsdam) über den Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz im Fremdsprachenunterricht. Im weiteren Verlauf gab es zahlreiche Vorträge und Workshops zu Themen wie kreatives Schreiben, Mehrsprachigkeit, Binnendifferenzierung oder frühes Deutschlernen. Besonders wertvoll war der persönliche Austausch zwischen den Teilnehmenden – in den Pausen, bei der Stadtführung oder beim gemeinsamen Mittagessen. So wurde die Konferenz nicht nur zu einer Quelle neuer Ideen, sondern auch zu einem Ort lebendiger Begegnung. Unser Eindruck: Zwei Tage voller Inspiration, Gespräche und praktischer Impulse für den Unterricht.
